Verse Of the Week for August 11 - August 17

Verse Of the Week for August 11 - August 17

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

- Mark 8:36
This verse speaks to us about the value of an individual’s soul. Man is a trinity. Man has a body, soul, and spirit. When a person dies, his body returns to this earth. His spirit returns unto God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7. Mans soul is lost because of sin. Our verse of the week asks a question. To what profit is it to man if he should gain the whole world. If it were possible to possess the entire world, to what profit is that to man? If he loses his soul. Man’s soul is of tremendous value. Man’s soul needed to be redeemed, purchased back. The Bible says in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death…” The payment for the penalty of sin is death. Death, in the first portion of this verse, is eternal separation from God. The payment for sins penalty had to be paid in order for man to be reconciled to God. The last part of Romans 6:23 state “…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” This tells us of God’s provision to purchase man’s soul. The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. In John 3:16 Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The price paid for the soul of man was the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. He, the spotless, sinless, lamb of God, paid our sin debt in full! So what has a man profited if it were possible, to gain the whole world, and still lose his own soul. Many people believe that happiness comes in the things they are able to possess. True happiness is in knowing that our sins are forgiven, and that we have an eternal home in heaven! Dear Lord, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for providing your Son as the sacrifice for our sin. We love you, thank you, praise you for your mercy and grace. We deserve Hell, but you offer us eternal life through your Son Jesus Christ! Amen!
